Do you recognize this? You are looking forward to having diner this weekend. You have high expectations about that one restaurant with the really good reviews. On the website of this restaurant you are already deciding what you are going to order. When you are eating there, you realize the portions are way bigger than you expected (or your eyes where bigger than your mouth). And you realize the best thing was supposed to be the desert. Unfortunately! What do you do? Do you keep eating until you’re sick? (….) Or would your let your food be thrown away? (such a waste). There is a third option: A doggy bag!
What is a doggy bag?
A doggy bag, foody bag, to go bag or whatever you want to call it is a bag that you can ask for in restaurants to bring you leftover food home. This way you make sure you don’t waste your food and you will have something nice to eat the next day!
Where did the doggy bag originate?
The doggy bag has its roots in America and was first used in 1950. In most of the cases the portions in the VS are so big that the customers can’t eat all of it. The leftover food would be brought back home “for the dog”, where it probably really went is some cases. Nowadays it’s normal to bring your leftover food home. In most of the restaurant in America you always get a doggy bag at the end of your meal.
In Holland we still think that asking for a doggy bag is not normal. Often you will feel like people are looking at you weird and it will be the cause for some awkward situations. And furthermore, you never know if the restaurant even offers doggy bags. Especially the higher end restaurants don’t want to use doggy bags, because they can only guarantee the quality of the food in the restaurant and not outside. And of course, it is not really polite to ask for a doggy bag in these kinds of restaurants.
“ when you know that even you neighbors, family and friends ask for a doggybag, it somehow -unconsciously- gets normal ”
Patrick Wessels, consumer psychologist
Research that a Dutch environmental organization (milieuorganisatie Natuur & Milieu) did shows that 5 years ago only 27% of the restaurants offered you to bring your leftovers home. Now, 5 year later this number has risen to 46% but still the food waste in the hospitality industry is really big. We waste about 55.000 tons each year. This comes down to about 83 million plates.
